Compost

35% screened compost, 40% screened topsoil, & 25% Peat Moss
Garden Mix

Compost will make lawns, flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and trees flourish even in poor soil conditions. It adds vital nutrients and organic matter that plants require for balanced growth. Yearly application is recommended. Compost should be worked into soil in the spring and used as mulch in the fall. Compost is intended as a soil supplement and not as a soil replacement.

TOP DRESSING TO REJUVENATE LAWNS:

As a nitrogen-rich fertilizer, compost is an excellent additive for lawns, especially when applied following aeration in the spring or fall. To top dress a lawn, spread a thin layer of compost over the lawn, approximately 1/3" deep. Over time, a healthy organic lawn will crowd out most weeds and become resistant to insect problems. A lawn can be maintained without the use of chemicals or pesticides.

STARTING A NEW LAWN

The lawn area should be prepared as thoroughly for sodding as it would be for seeding to ensure it is level and will rapidly establish. Spread the compost 2" deep over the area and work it into the topsoil. The aim is to have soil that is well mixed and loose to a depth of 6". After raking the area level, break up any large chunks that remain on the surface. Once the new lawn is seeded or sodded, it should be kept moist until the grass is well established.

FOR FIRST TIME GARDENS

When making a flower or vegetable bed for the first time, apply 2-4 " of compost over the intended area, the more the better. Till the compost into a soil depth of 6". Deep cultivation and regular application of compost will create a soil medium conducive to plant growth.

TO SUPPLEMENT EXISTING FLOWER AND VEGETABLE GARDENS

Before planting seeds or transplants, apply the compost 2" deep over the garden. Till the compost into the soil.

AS A TOP DRESSING FOR ESTABLISHED GARDENS

Compost is an all purpose mulch. It has an attractive natural appearance as well as benefits to soil nutrition. For flower gardens, and around shrubs and trees, the compost should be spread 2" deep.

RAISING BEDS

Use garden mix when raising beds more than four inches.

FOR SHRUBS AND TREES

A hole twice the size of the root ball of the transplant should be dug. Garden mix should be applied and tamped down. The soil should be kept moist throughout the first growing season.
