FAQ

Do you deliver in bags?

Our compost and garden mix is thriving with billions of microorganisms that depend on an abundance of oxygen in order to maintain a healthy aerobic environment. Eventually, the organisms in the center of a bag can become oxygen deprived, which is the main reason we choose not to bag our products.

To help customers store their product, we recommend using a tarp that is large enough to be folded back over top of the product, or, alternatively, two smaller tarps. The product can then be uncovered on dry days to provide the necessary oxygen. Depending on how many cubic yards are delivered, we can recommend a good tarp size for the customer to have ready for delivery.

Can I pick up products myself?

Every Saturday morning from 9-11, weather permitting, we are at our yard and able to load your pick-up truck or trailer with the product(s) of your choice. You are also welcome to bring bags and load small amounts into the trunk of your car. We charge per cubic yard for the product, and the bobcat loading service is free. There are shovels available, but as it can get quite busy some days it is best to bring your own. Please call at least one day in advance to confirm that we will be on-site. In addition, you may call in advance to arrange an alternate day if Saturday is not feasible.

Please note that although we accept Master Card and Visa, the yard does not have debit.

Should I use Garden Mix or Compost to top dress my lawn?

When filling in holes or levelling your lawn, you may use our Garden Mix and then overseed. However, for top dressing, pure compost should be used.

What is the best technique to top dress my lawn, and should I overseed as well?

Though not necessary, overseeding is a good way to keep a lawn thick and to discourage weeds. Our suggested method is to first evenly overseed the lawn and then top dress it with about 1/3" of compost. This helps to keep the seeds moist so they can germinate easily.

Technique for top dressing:
Start by top dressing your lawn with about 1/3" of compost on the furthest, least accessible spot in your yard and work your way back, avoiding trampling the newly spread compost and packing down. This will ensure the grass will grow through it faster and more uniformly. A wheelbarrow, big aluminum grain shovel, and a rake are our preferred tools. Lightly toss the compost in a broad cast onto your lawn with the shovel and then rake in. We recommend shovelling out about one full wheelbarrow and then switch to the rake, working one section at a time. Do your best not to miss a spot because you'll notice later which areas received the most love!

After top dressing, give your lawn a thorough watering to help settle the compost in. By watering regularly in the days that follow, the grass seed will stay moist and the compost will begin to work its way down to the roots. However, if you are interested in water conservation – wait for rain. A few good showers will also do the trick. If properly applied and watered in, within a week the compost should be barely visible and instead you will begin to notice the transformation into lush green grass!

Are you able to bring multiple products on the same truck?

Yes, this is what we refer to as a split load. Our single axle truck is equipped with seven compartments that allow us to bring any or all of our products to you in one delivery and dump them in separate piles. It can also be used to dump piles of the same product in different locations. For example, if you want some compost in the front and some in the back lane it's no problem at all. However, you will need to advise us when you are ordering if you would like this service, because it requires more scheduling and planning when it is loaded at our yard. As such, we charge an additional $20 per split delivery.

How much product can you deliver in one truckload?

We have two different delivery vehicles in the Western Canada Compost fleet: a single axle truck and larger tandem axle truck.
Our single axle truck can carry 15 yards of Compost, 10 yards of Garden Mix or 25 yards of Mulch. The tandem axle truck can carry 30 yards of Compost, 20 yards of Garden Mix or 30 yards of Mulch. During the dryer months we are able to carry slightly larger loads due to the reduced weight.

Do you offer labour services?

We do not currently offer any labour services, but we can certainly recommend some landscaping companies for various jobs. For top dressing and smaller jobs, William from Renaissance Landscapes has been a long-term trusted customer of ours. For more information, visit his website at: www.renaissancelandscapes.ca
